DBIANE Award 2021: Shawmut Design and Construction – Brown University Wellness Center and Residence Hall
The Health and Wellness Center is co-located with a 162-bed Residence Hall for students who are committed to developing and sustaining healthy lifestyles and who want to live with like-minded students.
It provides space and resources for students to practice mindfulness techniques and learn about stress reduction, nutrition, and other components of a healthy lifestyle. It creates opportunities for Brown researchers and students to collaborate and study the effects of mindfulness practices on health, well-being, and educational attainment, and help to advance knowledge in this important arena of health sciences.
The health center includes a clinical area with more than 20 exam rooms, a counseling and psychological services department, administrative suite, radiology department, laboratory, pharmacy, and a student-led EMS department.
The project, which is part of the Brown/Shawmut Strategic Sourcing Program, is designed to LEED v4 Silver standards, using Fitwel and WELL certification systems as guidelines for the overall approach. This holistic approach to wellness translates directly into the building’s sustainable materials.
